The Irish classes consist of two (optional) immersion weekends and 10 weeks of online classes, meeting once a week for 2 hours. Classes are taught by Fulbright and PhD students from Ireland, so it is a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the Irish language and culture.

We’re offering three levels:
Beginning Irish 1: 20 September – 22 November
Intermediate Irish 1: 19 September – 21 November
Advanced Irish 1: 18 September – 19 November
Beginning Irish 1 focuses on mastering the phonemes of the language and on learning basic conversation.
Intermediate Irish 1 focuses on the verbs, past, present and future tenses.
Advanced Irish 1 focuses on the verbs in the subjunctive and past subjunctive moods, the habitual past tense, and the imperative mood. Conversation based on prescribed text forms the greater part of the zoom class.

Costs: The cost of the tuition is $299, or $279 for members of the Friends of Irish Studies.
Accreditation: Montana Office of Public Instruction credit is available for no additional charge.

The University of Montana currently offers five courses of instruction on campus as well as evening community classes in Missoula and Helena; Irish language immersion days in Butte, Bozeman, Great Falls and Helena; and a week-long immersion program every July in Butte. There are also conversation groups meeting three evenings a week in Missoula and groups meeting once a week in Helena and Butte. There are three instructors from Ireland teaching the courses in the fall with another two teachers joining in the spring to facilitate progress in conversational Irish. Our annual Beginners Irish Conversation classes will commence September 10 to November 13, on ten Friday evenings 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The classroom is located on Mercer Island (just off I-90).
The book we are using is Colloquial Irish.
The course fee is $299.00.
There is a saying in Irish: Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam (A country without a language is a country without a soul). Language is central to culture and by learning the Irish language you will derive valuable insight into all aspects of Irish culture.
