Out of curiosity, is there any way of getting Irish subtitles on TG4? I think there used to be a facility like that on the station a few years back. .
At the moment they are available on the broadcast service for a few shows (Ros na Rún) mostly kids ones (Garfield, spongebob). Unfortunately it uses the old teletext technology so you have to go thru a sequence of a few steps to access page 887 on teletext while on the channel.
Check the schedule to find out the shows that are subbed ‘as Gaeilge’. They use some codes OS/GS – OS = on screen/burned in English or GS: Gaeilge Subtitling.
There is no version of this at present on the TG4 player online.
In the recently published RTÉ Irish Language Working Group report (Feb 2014), the issue of subtitles was highlighted several times, but mostly from the perspective that native speakers want to be able to turn off English subtitles on any RTÉ shows in Irish.
