    A Chairde

How should we describe a progressing (advancing) fog?

    Will it be

an ceo ag dul cinn ?

    an ceo a chiomsíonn?

    2ND question –

what would be the Old Irish or Ancient Irish equivalent of
    tromcheo

Féach ar an nasc seo le haghaidh “advancing”: http://www.focloir.ie/ga/dictionary/ei/advance?advSearch=1&q=advancing&inlanguage=en#advance__17

Níl aon tagairt den fhocal “dlúmhaí” sa Nua-Chorpas na hÉireann.

Tá an ceo ag bogadh ar aghaidh/méadú/scaipeadh amach/teacht inár dtreo …? (ag brath ar an gcomhthéacs, ar ndóigh)

    Go raibh maith agaibh –

It seems As Béarla, that “move forward INTRANSITIVE bog ar aghaidh téigh chun tosaigh” might suit the phrase.

Can a native speaker please confirm that ‘ceo’ can accept such a description?

Á mh’anam gurb iomaí sin bealach a bhféadfadh an Gaeilgeoir cur síos ar an gceo… D’fhéadfadh an ceo a bheith siar, nó aniar, nó siar amach, nó aniar isteach, srl…; b’fhéidir go sloigfeadh sé rud, nó go mbeadh an rud sloigthe aige; d’fhéadfadh sé a bheith ina dhlúimh, nó ina choill, nó ina lomra; d’fhéadfá “púir cheo” a thabhairt air, nó “ceirtlín cheo”; d’fhéadfadh sé a bheith liath agus dlúth; d’fhéadfadh sé sní isteach nó amach…; b’fhéidir go bhféadfadh sé tolgadh roimhe, nó snámh, nó eile…

Go díreach, a Chúnla! “Sní” – sin focal dúchasach coitianta go leor.

Note that the phrase is “dul chun cinn”, not “dul cinn”. That’s not the phrase you want here, though, as others have said.

Also, I’m not aware of any such word as “ciomsíonn”.

The suggestions Cúnla and Ovunanja gave are great.
