ParticipantDeir an reacaire “Tonn tuile agus an tonn ____ na trá; an ní ____ (bheart?) an tuile duit, ____ (bheart?) an _______ do lámh”.
Ní thuigim go hiomlán, agus bheadh an-fhonn orm fháil amach cé as a tháinig an sliocht seo. An bhfuil a fhios ag éinne agaibh?

ParticipantIs rann é ón gcaoineachán “Aithbe dam bés mora” (sean-Ghaedhilge):

– – – – – – – – – –
Tonn tuili
ocus ind í aithbi áin:
a n-do-beir tonn tuili dait
beirid tonn aithbi as do láim.
– – – – – – – – – –
Ach measaim go bhfuil an leagan ar Mise Éire nuachoirithe don C.O. – – comhaithríonn sé ón mbunfhoinse in áiteanna.Má tá cluas mhaith ag éinne, is é seo an píosa ón scannán:

ParticipantMaith thú! Bhí mé ag smaoineamh gur sean-ghaeilge í, ach is léir go bhfuil athraithe áirithe ann chomh maith. GRMA!

ParticipantNod libh:
ní -> rud
tonn ag trá -> tonn ag dul amach arís
bheir -> leagan de tabhair.August 27, 2012 at 10:25 pm #42478Héilics Órbhuí
Participantní -> rud
knew that one 😉
tonn ag trá -> tonn ag dul amach arís
this too, but what he says sounds almost more like “tonn aic’ na trá”, which I don’t quite get
bheir -> leagan de tabhair.
thanks, that does make sense. i got the sense through context that is what was going on but hadn’t heard it before.

ParticipantThere is tonn aic? or something in there but I can’t hear it clearly.
I consulted FGB and Dineen under Tonn but found nothing.
I think it is an “ebbing wave” that is meant.
August 28, 2012 at 7:33 am #42481Héilics Órbhuí
ParticipantThe subtitles say:
“The incoming wave
and the retreating wave ebbing
what the flowing tide gives you
the ebbing tide
will take from your hand”Dunno if that helps. For me it didn’t provide any additional clues, but you have more knowledge than me.

ParticipantThe sense is clear, but I can’t identify the word!
I check the word in the version Cionaodh gave in DIL; that often lists alternative spellings one or more of which is more easily recognisable. But it listed the word as mysterious, meaning unclear!
August 28, 2012 at 7:46 am #42483aonghus
ParticipantOK, I looked more carefully:
DIL has aithbe “ebb, reflux, decline” and Dineenn has “aithim” as a verb to ebb.
Focal.ie has “aife”
http://potafocal.com/Metasearch.aspx?Text=ebb&GotoID=focal
I’ll have to listen again, but that would fit.
August 28, 2012 at 8:10 am #42484Héilics Órbhuí
ParticipantOh, good find! “Aife” is in Ó Dónaill as well, incidentallly. Do you think the narrator here is dropping the “s” as in “aife a’ do lámh”?
August 28, 2012 at 8:12 am #42485aonghus
ParticipantNot sure. The background drowns what he is saying somewhat.
August 28, 2012 at 8:26 am #42486Héilics Órbhuí
ParticipantYeah.
I believe the first part which I thought was something like “aic'” is in fact also “aife”. The full line is something like “agus tonn aife ina trá” or “aife na trá”, not sure.
This would jive with the original version of the stanza, as well.March 24, 2013 at 5:01 pm #43724Doimnic

“Tonn tuile agus an tonn ____ na trá; an ní ____ (bheart?) an tuile duit, ____ (bheart?) an _______ do lámh”.An bhfuair tú amach cadé go díreach atá ann ins an sliocht seo? Mar bhí an cheist chéanna agamsa féin agus mé ag amharc ar an scannán sin, tamall ó shin…
Títear domhsa gur sé seo atá ann:
Tonn tuile, agus an tonn ag trá
An ní ‘bhéarfaidh tonn tuile duit
Béarfaidh tonn trá ó do lámhAch ní raibh mé ró-chinnte ach a oiread…
March 24, 2013 at 8:00 pm #43727Héilics Órbhuí
ParticipantNí bhfuair mé freagra chinnte don cheist seo choíche.. ach cloisim “aife” nó focal dá shamhail istigh ann.
Tonn tuile agus an tonn aife ‘na trá
an ní ‘bheir tonn tuile duit
bheir tonn aife ó do lámhSeo é a chloisim ach níl mé cinnte ar chor ar bith faoi.
