What dialect would have been spoken in Longford in the decades preceding the famine? How common would Irish-speakers have been vs. English-speakers?

(Yes, this is about ancestors of mine)

A kind of Connachta Irish, I guess, with some Ulster features? But it’s hard to know…

You might be interested in the Doegen Records Web Project (http://dho.ie/doegen/home). The recordings date between 1928 – 1931, and although there aren’t any from Longford, there are from surrounding counties. Not an authoritative answer to your question, but maybe a piece of the puzzle.

Douglas Hyde spoke Roscommon Irish. Any recordings of him speaking Irish might give a general idea of what Longford Irish would have sounded like.

Mayo Irish would be about as close as you could come to it today.
