hello,
i recently inherited a handmade Celtic cross made of matchsticks which is believed to have been made by one of my ancestors while in prison. there is an inscription on the bottom and i was hoping someone would be able to translate it for me.
I think it says (excuse the spelling)
“Oeanta ago .
O. Mac Siolla Poil
Bailestain

It says:

D. MaÄ‹ [sic] Giolla á¹–óil
Bailestáin [sic] An CurraÄ‹“Made by
D. Mac Giolla Phóil
Bailestáin (?), An Currach (Curragh)”maÄ‹ (mach) perhaps because c is silent next to Giolla. (Ma’ Giolla)
“Baile stáin”, “tintown”, is the name of two internment camps in Curragh, Co. Kildare.
Thank you very much for your quick responses, i really appreciate it. The information helps a lot. Here is a picture of the cross, all made with matchsticks and pieces of vinyl records. Very detailed so I assume he had a lot of time on his hands in Baile stáin.
