    In Benedictus by John O’Donoghue (author of Anam Chara) there is a blessing entitled In Praise of Water, the final two lines of which are as follows:
    Blessed be water Our first mother.
    My translation (with the help of Lughaidh):
    Go naofar uisce Ár gcéad mháthair.
    I prefer naofar (as used in The Lords Prayer – go naofar d’ainm), to naomhaítear.
    Is my/our translation ok?

    Maybe a better interpretation of ‘an ghrian ghealgháireach’ would be ‘the radiant sun’. ??

    I like an ghrian ghealgháireach!

    So, just to double check, an ghrian ghealgháireach has a meaning of ‘the smiling sun’. Have I taken the right meaning?

    In ‘i Lár an tSamhraidh a’ a leigh mé é.

    Ó Dónaill and De Bhaldraithe are great reads in themselves. Lots of gems of information in them.

    Thanks Aonghus. I see that I’ve used ‘leat’ when I should have used ‘dhuit’. I suppose I’m inferring ‘kinder to you’ rather than ‘better for you’.

    Does ‘bhfuil’ have a different meaning in the second verse?

    B’fearr liom í ná bó is na bearrach
    A bhfuil dá loingeas a’ tarraingt chun cuain

    Thanks to everyone for the replies. I never would have figured out that ‘chan fhuil’ is basically ‘níl’.
