That’s quite an inventive one, although The Gospel according to Wiki says differently:-

The term crack is ultimately derived from the Middle English crak, meaning “loud conversation, bragging talk”

Not that Wiki is the most authoritative of sources, but that sounds a little more on the money for me since it tends to fit the description of what “craic” is generally thought to encompass. Not that the first definition wouldn’t be enjoyable either. But when someone tel’s me to join them for some “great craic” I might have reservations in future if it entails some good old skin beating.
